How to Safely Store Books in Storage Units in Las Vegas

If you’re an avid reader, you may not want to part ways with some of your favorite books. But, books can take up a lot of room in your home, so one way to hold onto them is to put them in storage units in Las Vegas. If you choose to do this, make sure you follow these tips to keep your books in good condition while they’re in storage:

Remove dust.

Gently wipe all of your books down with a soft cloth prior to packing them. Do not use moist wipes or add water to these cloths. It’s important that your books stay as dry as possible before they are headed into storage. Why? Any moisture on the pages could lead to mold and mildew growth inside a storage unit. If any of your books feel damp, let them air out before you begin to pack them. Learn how to identify, prevent, and remove mold and mildew from books.

Use small boxes.

You may think it makes more sense to buy larger boxes so you can fit more books into each one, but this is not the best way to pack your books. Instead, buy smaller boxes and try to fit five or six books in each one. Then, label the outside of the box with a description of what books are inside. Using smaller boxes will make it easier for you to transport all of your books to the storage unit without damaging them. If you use descriptive labels on each box, you won’t accidentally damage your books while sorting through the boxes trying to find what you’re looking for.

Stack the boxes squarely.

Each box will be fairly heavy, even if you only pack five to six books per box. To avoid boxes from falling over and damaging the books inside, be sure to stack each box squarely on top of the one below it. Also, don’t stack the boxes all the way up to the ceiling of the storage unit. It’s much easier to move and access the boxes if you stack them to the height of your shoulders.

Use wooden pallets.

All of the books within the boxes on the floor could be ruined if the storage unit floods. Luckily, this problem can be easily avoided by putting down wooden pellets on the floor of the storage unit. This will elevate your boxes off of the floor and protect them in the event that it does flood.

Install shelving.

If you want to display your books inside the storage unit, consider buying shelving designed for this purpose. Shelving can be easily added to any storage unit—however, you probably won’t be able to fit as many books inside the unit if you choose to store them on shelves instead of in boxes.
